The quotes from this article have been transcribed from a conversation I had with Paul, founder of Pez-Bro Rosin, when he was on my Podcast Weedlive.  Just search “Weedlive Pez Bro” on youtube and you’ll immediately find the 3 hour interview/smoke sesh.Hashnerd Hangout Publications came from my idea to interview my own heroes and the heroes of our community, in a long-form dialogue, and offer both the raw interview in audio\video format to accompany this printed version with the photos that coordinate.   This is the first of many. 

There is no way to better paint a picture of someone than to let them speak their truth in their own words.  Here is the true uncut story right from the horse’s mouth.  In this case the Fish, as later explained, as ‘Pez’ means ‘fish’ in Spanish.First I’ll say that this upcoming introductory quote is inspiring to me and is a great summary of the type of mindset that every person who I know that is involved in hash looks at their work and the world.

Paul: ”You get what you put out there dude, if you’re not out there putting out, you’re not out there - and I’m not talking dirty you know...If you’re not out there pushing hard, you’re not grinding, you’re not hustling...you’re just working a 9-5 job, and that’s all you do.. You expect more and you complain about everything.

You know what? That’s your own fault.  Get your ass out there and hustle.  That’s nonstop.  You get what you want dude.  You gotta put in the hard work, the effort.  You gotta study, learn, you gotta educate yourself.  And if you aren’t out there doing that you better be happy with what you are doing, and you better not complain”.

 

Pez-Bio Origins

“Back in 2015 I was with my partner that was working with me and we were trying to figure out what to do, man.  All these things are popping up in the Cannabis Industry, like this, this, this and like all of these things started popping off and people want ‘em like it’s a new trend.  So BHO was at the top of the game.  Everybody wanted to get in on it.

Everybody wanted to buy systems.  So my partner and I at the time were seriously looking into buying a BHO system, spending tens of thousands of dollars, and running BHO. At the time, I used to work for a company called Smart Pots, I was a sales rep for them, they are based out of OKC and I travelled the states and sold smart pots.  So, I got to see all these new inventions.  All these new things that were being made for the cannabis industry, for the smokers.  For the new products that came out, like rosin....At the time, at the end of 2015, nobody knew what rosin was. 

There was only a very few...and I learned about it on one of my sales trips going to Chico: one of my homies was like ‘Yo have you ever heard of Rosin’ -[we were taking dabs of BHO]-I’m like ‘No, dude what’s Rosin?’ He’s like, ‘dude you can take Dabs of it, it’s just like BHO its full-melt blah blah blah-You wanna try some?’  I’m like, ‘Yeah!’.  He pulls some out and I’m like ‘Oh, my God this is Amazing’... So, the end of my sales trip I come back home, I’m hanging out in my garage, I’ve got a trim crew there - all trimming.  To my partner at the time, I was like ‘Hey have you heard of Rosin?’ He typed it up on Youtube and found people smashing it with hair straighteners, and were like ‘Holy shit! What the Hell?’ and we instantly ran down to the store and bought 3 hair straighteners. 

We Glued the tops of them with pieces of wood and we used these vices and we ended up sticking buds in between them and smashing and cranking them down hella tight.   Just to see this gold oozing out of the sides.We were like ‘Holy shit, oh my god...let’s start a brand!’“I’m a huge fisherman, my last name is Lopez.  That’s where Pez-Bro came from.  Pez in Spanish means Fish. Pescado. It’s got a lot of different meanings behind it, it means a lot to me.”

On his histoy of hashmaking:

“The Hashmaking for me.... I didn’t Really have people... nobody really ‘taught’ me, like... I didn’t go learn from Frenchy Cannoli, or I didn’t go to a specific Class and was taught by anybody... I lived out in Potter Valley.  I went to School in Potter Valley, Mendocino County.  There was a guy out there that uhhh knew his hash (he looked at me intensely) he knew how to make hash candies... all kinds of Hashish stuff.   He taught me things, he told me tricks. So, I learned all these little things.  You know, watching videos you pick up these little things and then you put it in your own way, and you make your hash your way.

Unite instead of in-fight. Common enemies in nature are now befriended in the common goal to dab the world solventless.“I have been talking with Byrd a lot.. And Byrd told me that I’ve helped him out so much, I’ve done so much for him, and I helped him steer himself the right way...and there were some little things I was missing on making my hash, on how I was doing my hash...and so I saw his cold room and I’m like, ‘Fuck man, I need to build my cold room.. Why am I slacking on this?’  Just Seeing his room inspired me, I pushed, Boom, got it done. 

And then he was like ‘Hey man, I wanna show you how to do this, like are you cool with that ? I’d like to show you how I make hash, I’d love to give a favor back to you’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah Bro I’d Love that!’  So he’s like, ‘You need to buy these washing machines’, he explained some stuff to me, I bought the new washing machines, he came over to my house. We changed the washing machines up, we fixed them the way he liked them.  And we ran hash his way.  And it was phenomenal.

My cold room is phenomenal.  My cold room gets super cold.  Having a room that can control everything-your temperature-it means the whole world when you’re making hash... Cause if you don’t have a cold room or you are using warm water when you are rinsing or washing, it’s gonna fuck things up, it’s gonna change the color, it’s gonna darken it, it’s gonna oxidize it.  You just don’t want any of that.  So, he taught me a few little tricks, and I put that in my own ways in doing that as well...and so much respect to Byrd as well.  Byrd has taken classes from Frenchy Cannoli, and he has learned from him, and he has probably exceeded Frenchy in his hashmaking skills. So, Byrd and I looked me right in the eyes) I’m not cut-throat...If I was a straight businessman, then that’s what it’s about.  I’m not like that.  I know business, but I’m not like that.  I know that sharing the love and treating people the right way, and showing that you care...that’s gonna bring longevity of business and better business in the long-run’.

 

Pez-Bro and Byrd continue to influence more and more people in this great solventless community.  Together they are now teaching a course on the entire process of ice water hashmaking all the way to Rosin & more.“My journey with Pez-Bro has been a very positive journey. There’s a lot of people that hate on brands. There’s a lot of people who talk shit. They pull this thing out and they’re like ‘Oh this is brown blah blah blah’ - they’re just a hater.  I never had a lot of people through my social media talking shit to me, saying ‘Your product sucks, it doesn’t smell good’ or ‘I bought your product at this dispensary and it is horrible.’ I never had people do that dude, I feel it’s because all these people that have purchased my product have met me. They’ve either met me at a show, or they met me somewhere have built this relationship together that seems to be really strong.  Byrd had to give his freeze drier back and he’s like ‘Hey man, I’ve got all this hash, can I come and use your freeze drier?’ and I’m like ‘Fuck Yeah, Bro.. Come on over”.  So he came over for like 4 or 5 weeks in a row each week once a week and kept using my freeze drier.  I didn’t charge him anything from it.  I didn’t ask him for anything, of course he gave me rosin which is so much appreciated. 

 

And he was super appreciative of it as well being able to use my freeze drier so he can continue to make his hash and his rosin,  So you know, if I was a greedy piece of shit motherfucker that was in full competition with somebody like that, I wouldn’t have allowed him to come over.  I wouldn’t have talked with him.  I wouldn’t have gave him tips, he wouldn’t have gave me tips, it would’ve been cut-throat and been like ‘No, Fuck you dude you can’t come over, you can’t use my shit’. 

 

No, we’re homies, dude.  We’re Friendly Competition.  We’re not out there trying to talk shit about each other’s brands, we’re out there pushing each other’s brands.  Whether I got his brand on me and my brand I’m like ‘You gotta try both of these, these things are fire... Byrd and Pez-Bro, even Mendo Budsmith or Mendo Dope, it’s all about spreading each other’s love for it...(he that I am training somebody and they got a good feeling from me.  When I get people on Instagram contacting me or texting me, I try my hardest just to get right back to them, to say something to them, unless it’s a scam page or some robot page. If it’s a real person I’m gonna contact them back and I’m gonna answer a question for them, help them out.Tthose people say every time, ‘Thank you so much for taking time out of your time to answer that question because no one else will help me.
