Mike Wise & The Cannabis Awards - By Dee Mani-Mitchell

From being locked up in prison to becoming a cannabis voice..

On the 2nd February 2021 - Mike Wise launched “The Cannabis Awards” where an online audience was able to vote for their favorite people within the Cannabis Industry.  These community awards are the only wholly transparent, community-based, non-corporate sponsored cannabis awards event set up solely by Mike. I asked Mike why he had decided to arrange such a memorable occasion.

His reasoning is to recognize the selfless people who deserve it by tirelessly breaking down barriers and fighting against unfair legislation.

Texas-born Mike is passionate about skateboarding and wakeskating, where he currently ranks 6th in the world professional circuit. However, his chosen career path lay in television when he graduated from the University of Texas with a radio, film, and movie degree. Mike has always been an “on-the-go” type of guy and describes himself as “always moving around,” this was probably the cause of his health issues.

Being hyper-active meant that Mike had never really developed good eating habits and would often end up grabbing fast food from drive thru’s and consuming soda daily.  To alleviate the digestive discomfort, he would take over-the-counter pain killers, which became a part of his everyday life. In 2001, he began to suffer from his alimentary canal continually being on the road and eating non-nutritious food. To start with, it was just occasional bloating, which soon escalated into discomfort and sharp chest pains. These became so unbearable that they would cause vomiting.

Things got so bad that his sleep was massively compromised and the only way to stop the nausea was to eat every 2-4 hours. What started only as symptoms when he ate were beginning to affect him every hour of his life.Mike battled with the torment of either experiencing excruciating chest pains or vomiting. As he had to eat to relieve the issues continually, he lost all his appetite and had no control over his sleep patterns. Whenever he woke, it would result in a quick dash to the bathroom to be sick; this became his everyday life.

Alongside the regurgitation also came the blood, which happened so frequently that Mike described it as being familiar and stopped becoming alarmed by the sight of vomit and blood down the toilet bowl.It was now apparent to Mike that he had Crohn’s disease, in response to which he automatically developed a coping mechanism.

Whenever he was on the road, he would carefully plan his destination to incorporate a toile trip every 30 minutes, which became Mike’s “new normal.”In 2001, Mike discovered his passion for cannabis when he started smoking and noticed that cannabis helped his Crohns; however, he had to smoke 28 grams per week to curb the disease. In 2005 he began growing his yield and selling to some of his mates.

However, in 2012, he got arrested and unjustifiably spent two years in a Texas prison for his activity. Prison life was unfair for Mike, and he would often find himself in solitary confinement drugged up with narcotics!

In 2016, Mike discovered Rick Simpson Oil (RSO), which he began to produce himself and use to self-medicate. RSO was a revelation for Mike after he had his first full night of sleep without having to wake and run to the bathroom. Instantly, Mike noticed a relief of his symptoms and felt nothing other than ecstatic with the results.  During this time, he moved to Colorado and filmed a documentary titled “Illegally Alive,” which focused on several families who uprooted their lives to obtain medical cannabis for their children. Mike then began producing cannabis oil for himself and thousands of other patients in need.

Feeling in the right place mentally and physically, he decided to embark on a cross-country tour with former NFL athlete Boo Williams to promote cannabis through his BooBeary Kares brand. The project was going great: they traveled to 13 different states and educated people across the USA on our sacred plant’s medical benefits. Unfortunately, arriving in Canada was a different story. A series of unfortunate events led Mike detained in a Canadian prison cell at the border. Luckily the detention was short-lived and he was soon released with a hefty fine and his oil confiscated.

The next move was to Amsterdam, where Mike launched OG Labs Genetics. He has since traveled the world to search for more information and data on the cannabis plant. He also flew out to Croatia to film a new documentary with Rick Simpson, titled “Rick and Me.”   Mike never stops, and he will never stop while there are legislations in place. He will be the industry voice and speak on behalf of cannabis patient rights.

He fights non-stop for prohibition and is known for his activist filmmaking, just like his public speaking. Mike can proudly admit that hundreds of thousands of people have become educated on using cannabis oil and producing their own to treat whatever health issue they may be experiencing. To date, everyone that has followed his advice has managed to either cure or control their disease. It seems fitting to end this article on Mike’s quote  - “cannabis saves lives, and prohibition needs to end now!

Crohn’s and Cannabis Oil

Here’s some information on why cannabis is a great treatment choice for Crohn’s disease to reflect on Mike’s healing. We already understand that cannabinoids can have profound anti-inflammatory effects, but can cannabis oil provide long-term relief for people suffering? An Israeli study from 2019 suggests it can.

Crohn’s disease is a painful, sometimes debilitating, inflammatory bowel disease characterized by inflammation and can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, but most commonly the small intestine.

The symptoms include:

bloody diarrhea

fever

rectal bleeding

abdominal pain

Medications are often prescribed to control inflammation. These commonly include antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, aminosalicylates (a type of anti-inflammatory drug), steroids, immune modifiers, or biologic therapies. In a first-of-its-kind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, researchers found that cannabis produced clinical remission in more than half of patients after eight weeks of treatment.

Researchers recruited 46 people experiencing moderately severe Crohn’s disease for the study. The severity of the participant’s symptoms and their quality of life were measured before, during, and after treatment.

Gut inflammation was checked using an endoscope and checking markers of inflammation present in blood and stool samples. Some received a placebo, while other patients were given cannabis oil containing 15% CBD and 4%THC. Both are naturally occurring substances in cannabis oil. The research was presented at the United European Gastroenterology Conference in 2019.

Reducing symptoms

After two months, researchers said the participants given cannabis oil experienced a significant improvement in their Crohn’s disease symptoms and life quality. About 65% of the cannabis oil group strictly met the criteria for a full remission of symptoms, while 35% of the placebo group did.

In issue 149 of Weed World Magazine, we featured Laura Burrill. This British mother had had ulcerative colitis for many years until she started self-medicating with cannabis oil and managed to heal her condition in just a short period of time. Ulcerated Colitis is also an inflammatory bowel disease that is considered worse than Crohn’s as patients often need surgery. S

cientists have concluded that there is no known cure for colitis. They refuse to label cannabis oil as a cure instead of treating patients with toxic pharmaceutical drugs that do nothing other than mask the pain without actually addressing the root cause.
