To Boldy Go

It’s no secret that weed is one of the most consumed substances in the world, yet there are still an incredible number of locations around the world where it is demonized and outlawed.

Incredibly, despite the fact that the developing legal markets in some countries have proven incredibly lucrative, there remains a status quo for many who find themselves having to deal exclusively with an unregulated black market in order to gain access to their personal supplies.

In the UK, which is home to one of the world's largest manufacturers of cannabis-derived medicine, there has been some small signs of progress in relation to access to medicinal cannabis but there is a still a long way to go in terms of recognizing the true impact that legal channels could potentially have.A few years back you might remember hearing about a start-up by the name 'Herb Club' which was a sort of 'social media site for stoners'. By making friends and visiting different 'stores' on the site you were able to make purchases of a wide variety of strains which could be sent out via Royal Mail.

For people who live outside of major cities, or people who find the idea of working directly with a dealer to be slightly intimidating, this type or service was a godsend and it proved to be a generally reliable system on the whole. Sadly, the site eventually shut down due to spiraling costs and the community had to go their separate ways. Having purchased a number of high-quality buds from a few of the vendors, finding myself thrust back into the world of searching out leads through various contacts in the hope of finding something of a reasonable quality was not the most fun experience.

I have to admit that coming home to find some Gelato on my doorstep was high in every sense of the word. Recently, news surfaced that commuters in London had noticed some strange advertisements popping up around the capital. This appeared to be guerrilla-marketing at its best, with posters pasted over pre-existing ad campaigns or hurriedly placed in prime locations, but the content itself was the thing that stood out the most. These ads initially seemed like they might be linked to a new courier or food delivery service, but on closer inspection it became clear that they were actually advertising a website offering mail order weed and various weed-related products. Its name? Dispenseroo. The site's founder has been making waves after claiming that he had contacted the Inland Revenue Department to make an offer to pay taxes on his company's revenue over the past year.

Some of the people behind the site have indicated that the idea came from their sense that the current rules and laws in relation t cannabis are vastly outdated. In an interview with ITV News, it was explained that the company is "trying to demonstrate that marijuana laws in the EU and cannabis laws in the UK are archaic and [that they're] trying to show the demand from the people's die of how many people want clean, safe cannabis." Having stated that the company was now seeing turnover of more than £50,000 per week, it's clear that there is a significant market to tap into and they are not ashamed to admit how they make their money. By basing their main operations in jurisdictions which act outside of the restrictions of UK law, they seem to be exploiting technicalities to their advantage and they indicate that they have an expansive network of growers who they rely upon to fulfill the customer's needs. This system certainly has some potential for success but there are a number of potential pitfalls too

A quick peruse of the website shows that you can indeed order to your heart's content, but be warned that this is certainly not a cheap option. In fact, the prices seem quite astronomical, especially when there is no real guarantee of quality once a purchase is made. I was shocked to find that an 1/8th of an ounce is priced at anywhere from £60-85 (depending on whether it is 'Premium Cali' or a UK strain - although this does not seem to actually clarify if the premium strains are actually imports or simply recognized strains grown in the UK) which is a significant increase to what some people will be used to paying, with typical prices ranging from around the £25 mark for a similar weight. If you fancy something a little different to the norm, the site also offers THC-vape cartridges, hash, pre-rolls and a decent range of alternatives for customers to choose from.Reviews for the site seem a little mixed at this point, with some people indicating that their orders never arrived and others claiming that the product they received was either inferior to expectations or a complete waste of money.

As you might expect with a website of this type, there are some technical issues and a lack of workforce behind the scenes to contend with problems that may arise yet there are also numerous positive reviews with customers expressing their contentment with what they received. When you look at the costs of legal weed in the US, with the inherent taxes and fees to pay when making a purchase, it's clear that the legal market could potentially be far more expensive than the black market. With that being said, if the legal offers guaranteed premium product which is proven to be grown organically and lacks in any nasty additives etc. then people are more likely to accept the significantly higher prices. Of course, people will gladly pay for better quality when it is proven but that opens people up to being taken advantage of as there are no legal channels to follow if you get ripped-off.Perhaps this start-up is a sign of how things could work in a lucrative legal market, with businesses acting as a portal for growers to connect with a wider audience, but this still seems like it could be a long way off yet.

For now, at least, it offers people a different avenue to explore when it comes to getting safe access to a personal supply if they are prepared to deal with the associated risks. Until we reach a point where the UK government is prepared to alter its stance on cannabis, which could still be a long way off yet, there's a good chance that similar ventures to Dispenseroo will continue to appear. If you want to explore what they offer for yourself, you can easily find the website via any search engine, however we are not associated with them and bare no responsibility in relation to your experience.
